Sitting high on a hill above the hustle and bustle of Sydney's Dee Why beach is a beloved home, whose peaceful leafy outlook, gentle sea breezes and stunning ocean views have been enjoyed by a busy family of five for many years.
However, as the children grew and their family needs changed, our clients became increasingly challenged by the spaces they shared inside their seaside home.
Our brief was to redesign the internal layout to increase practicality and comfort for our modern family. The focus was to increase flow and usability of the spaces to maximise shared living areas downstairs, as well as sleeping areas upstairs.
Upon entering the original home, you were at once met with a narrow staircase which led to the bedrooms upstairs. Navigating past the awkwardly positioned stairs and journeying down a long, dark hallway finally revealed the kitchen and living area. As a consequence, the front of the home was never used, and the back of the house, although overlooking a beautiful garden with views out to the ocean, was not designed to its full potential.
We reimagined a radical new layout for the entrance level, moving almost every room – including the stairs and the kitchen – to create a fabulous indoor/outdoor flow.
We designed a stylish and welcoming foyer, with a large and bright hallway opening up onto a generous and luxurious kitchen, including a modern, custom built study space.
Our consistently minimal palette and use of timber throughout conveys a casual yet sophisticated feel. We added layers of lighting, beautiful soft furnishings and playful details to create warmth throughout.
We created generous volumes now filled with natural light, warm timber and elegant modern copper detailing.
The dramatic ‘Vertigo’ pendant by French designer Constance Guisset was seemingly made for this space, adding surprise and lightness as it gently moves and spins with the passing sea breeze.
The soft window treatments blend in beautifully and add a layer of privacy whilst still allowing natural light to effortlessly enter the space.
Fresh, neutral and soft tones create the perfect palette for the new serene bathrooms.
Winding up the new and improved staircase, we transformed two generous children's bedrooms into three! So now each child has their very own bedroom which we customised with unique, colourful details.
Our clients couldn't wait to utlise their new entertaining space and test-drive their new kitchen, so they hosted celebratory drinks and canapés with the interior and construction team to mark the completion of the project and the start of their new life in their modern family home by the sea.
