SOME CUSH FOR LE TUSH

The key piece of furniture in any living room is without doubt the lounge. Not only is it the largest piece of furniture but often the biggest investment, so it is important to get it right. We have put together some design advice to consider when selecting the perfect cush for your tush.

A living room is a gathering space, a place to the share conversation with friends and family, to entertain guests and to relax and unwind. The lounge is a true multi-tasker, it needs to be both inviting for large groups, intimate for small gatherings and incredibly comfy for late night Netflix binges.

I find it comforting to know that my lounge is patiently waiting for my derrière to arrive after a busy day! So put your feet up, settle in and let’s talk lounges . . .

THE BONES

When choosing any piece of furniture, it is important to consider the legs. If you want to evoke a light and airy feeling, choose a lounge that is elevated from the floor. Contemporary lounges tend to sit flush with the floor which help to anchor the room and surrounding furniture but beware as they can quickly overwhelm smaller spaces.

You want your lounge to look good from all angles, so don’t forget about the back and arms as they are often on show. Look for elegant stitching or piping details for a tailored look.

THE SKIN

Whether it is linen, velvet, chenille or sumptuous leather, pick a fabric that speaks to the style of your home. A great way to make your favourite fabrics more family (or pet) friendly is to choose a design with removable covers . . . I know what you’re thinking, and yes chic covers do exist! If you do prefer leather, don’t be scared to let it patina and age, there is a beautiful quality and richness to this look that takes years to evolve.

The cushion filling is crucial, if you desire an indulgently cosy lounge then feather or down is for you! If fluffing cushions is not your thing but you still prefer the look, opt for foam wrapped in feather as it will hold its shape.

THE HEART & SOUL

Lastly, but most importantly, don’t forget to have a bit of fun! Whether it is an edgy design like the 'Toga' by Ligne Roset or the contemporary classic 'Tufty Time' designed by Patricia Urquiola choose a design that makes you happy!

Colour is not just for walls! Why not complement your scheme with an enticing hue. Jewel tones such as emerald are a great place to dip your toe, but if you’re not ready to commit to the entire lounge, try it out with some decorative cushions for a softer but still impactful look.

If you are ready to amp up the fun-o-meter, go for a print! Whether delicate or loud, it is sure to make a statement.
