ALEX TALKS . . . DINING TABLES

As we head towards Christmas in July, I have been thinking about fabulous festive get togethers and what makes an indoor dinner party timeless yet at once in vogue. I approach setting a table in the same way I would the design of any room or space – to create a sense of occasion with an emphasis on style, simplicity, detail and quality.

In the Christmas spirit of giving, today I share my top tried-and-trusted design tips when it comes to setting a successful dining table. From lighting to styling, practicality to opulence, I hope you feel inspired to start planning your next gathering. Merry Christmas in July!

I build layers of textures to add warmth or drama to the dining space. For example linen napkins are a definite, and when paired against leather placemats they’re even better! Beautiful china, glassware and metallic cutlery create a feeling of indulgence and luxury.

Good lighting is paramount to achieving a balance between ambience and practicality. You want soft lighting, but enough so you can see your guests and the food on offer. This can be achieved by the introduction of candlelight to the table itself or dimmable overhead/nearby lighting.

To me, a successful dining experience engages all the senses, not just sight, smell and taste, so it is through the layering of various materials and finishes that engages the sense of touch, beautifully rounding out the other senses which will already be overloaded by the dining experience.

I love the addition of foliage to any table setting as it not only adds a layer of freshness to the table, but also to our sense of smell and to complement the food on offer.

For a more casual setting I take the approach that not everything has to match perfectly. I still love using a mix of textures but am far more adventurous with use of colour and mixing glassware to create a more fun, carefree and relaxed vibe. I would opt for placemats instead of a tablecloth here.

For a more formal approach I am quite traditional and can’t go past a freshly pressed, crisp, white tablecloth and matching linen napkins. They instantly add sophistication and an expectation of the occasion at hand. Simple candles of varying heights and sizes adds grandeur and dimension to the event and helps lift and fill a space if the ceilings are high. Fresh flowers are a must!

Good lighting is paramount to set the mood for the event, however one must achieve the right balance between ambience and practicality. Layers of lighting are important. We love low lighting but you must be able to see what is on your plate! We love a dimmable overhead pendant, candles or nearby lamps which offer manual directional lighting.

ALEX TALKS . . . ENTERTAINER'S KITCHENS

In the spirit of Summer and long balmy nights lending themselves to dining outdoors, at-home Christmas parties, and more family and social gatherings than you can poke your BBQ tongs at, Alex talks about how good design can turn a space where we simply prepare meals and drinks into a real 'Entertainer's Kitchen'.

'I believe entertaining is intrinsically tied to the Australian dream of the way we live and dine . . . it’s a lifestyle.

Fresh produce, accessible cooking shows and the 'market-to-table' movement have captured the hearts and taste buds of our country more than ever. Coupled with our long-held belief that the heart of a home is it's kitchen, as a designer it's my role to create unique spaces that are not only beautiful to live in, but are perfectly functional and efficient in every way.'

We love the textured tile splash back in our Moore Park Gardens project. The flexible island bench-come-dining table extension creates the ideal entertainer's kitchen in an inner city pad. The timber floorboards throughout the kitchen and living spaces create a visual connection and feeling of space.

'The key to a successful Entertainer's Kitchen is open plan with some areas to hide the mess, so you can enjoy the entertaining part and not have to clean up and keep the space looking perfect as you go. Coffee and tea making bars or cupboards where all the ingredients for a good brew are in one location means you don't have to cross the length of the kitchen every time you want to boil the kettle.'

The kitchen in our Stanley Avenue project is perfect for entertaining with seating at the breakfast bar allowing for two-way conversation, plenty of bench space for prep and plating, stone flooring throughout the kitchen and living creates a cohesive and larger sense of space, and last but not least a good exhaust is a must!

'Wine fridges or a bar area that are easily accessed from the adjoining kitchen, living or family areas ensure that gin and tonic preparation doesn't get in the way of meal preparation! Guests can happily help themselves without pulling the chef away from the job at hand.'

In our Marian Street project, we installed a bar area with side-by-side Vintec wine fridges. The bar area can be closed off with mirrored pocket doors that creates the feeling of space in the kitchen.

We designed a walk- in pantry behind the kitchen in our    Lord Street  project  that allowed for ample storage and additional preparation zones to hide the mess!

'As you may already know, I am obsessed with lighting, and believe that flexible lighting is important in Entertainer's Kitchens to create ambience and different zones for preparation or dining. Ambient strip lighting under overhead cupboards cast light onto deep spaces and in-pantry lighting on a sensor means you can always see even those items hidden at the back!'

High quality appliances are important in an Entertainer's Kitchen. A 900mm wide oven will allow you to cater for large groups with ease.

AN APPETITE FOR DESIGN

For those of us who have not been gallivanting around Europe enjoying a summer holiday on the Mediterranean Sea, we have been entertaining ourselves back home, enjoying the culinary delights and the design details of some of Sydney's finest bars and restaurants.

We have put together a few of our favourite dining details from venues around our studio in Potts Point and beyond, that we frequent for drinks after work with colleagues, meals with friends and catch ups with family. The list could go on . . . but here is just a taste!

We love the interior of Cho Cho San by George Livissianis with its back-lit ceiling that provides warm and ambient light for daytime and evening dining. The stretched Barrisol ceiling is a unique design feature that creates subtle lighting in what was a cavernous space with little access to natural light.

With French-colonial inspired interiors, The Butler on Victoria Street in Potts Point has seamlessly integrated the exterior green wall with the interior wall coverings, creating a lush, green restaurant and bar space that frames the panoramic view of Woolloomooloo and the CBD.

The Bridge Room in Sydney's CBD is a fine example of modern Australian cuisine. The sophisticated yet relaxed interior by Tobias Partners couples Japanese detail with Scandinavian style, housed in an historic 1930s Art Deco building. The tableware is a mix of Japanese ceramics and round felt placemats, coloured glass and simple cutlery, and acts as a neutral palette of textures and colours for which the food can be the hero.

Toko Japanese restaurant on Crown Street in Surry Hills has been a mainstay of dining in Sydney for many years. The timber clad interior with the feature light installation remains as current as ever in this simple and elegant interior.

We love the playful interiors at Merivale's Coogee Pavilion and its vast dining options including a wood-fire pizza oven, cocktail bar, coffee cart, oyster bar, flower stall and of course, the elaborate kids area with a life-size wall-mounted scrabble board. Even in winter, what better way to spend a weekend than with a family game of scrabble! The best thing about it? The kids can play for hours while the adults relax with a Beachside Fizz and a side of fries.
