Sitting high on a hill above the hustle and bustle of Sydney's Dee Why beach is a beloved home, whose peaceful leafy outlook, gentle sea breezes and stunning ocean views have been enjoyed by a busy family of five for many years.

However, as the children grew and their family needs changed, our clients became increasingly challenged by the spaces they shared inside their seaside home.

Our brief was to redesign the internal layout to increase practicality and comfort for our modern family. The focus was to increase flow and usability of the spaces to maximise shared living areas downstairs, as well as sleeping areas upstairs.

Upon entering the original home, you were at once met with a narrow staircase which led to the bedrooms upstairs. Navigating past the awkwardly positioned stairs and journeying down a long, dark hallway finally revealed the kitchen and living area. As a consequence, the front of the home was never used, and the back of the house, although overlooking a beautiful garden with views out to the ocean, was not designed to its full potential.

We reimagined a radical new layout for the entrance level, moving almost every room – including the stairs and the kitchen – to create a fabulous indoor/outdoor flow.

We designed a stylish and welcoming foyer, with a large and bright hallway opening up onto a generous and luxurious kitchen, including a modern, custom built study space.

Our consistently minimal palette and use of timber throughout conveys a casual yet sophisticated feel. We added layers of lighting, beautiful soft furnishings and playful details to create warmth throughout.

We created generous volumes now filled with natural light, warm timber and elegant modern copper detailing.

The dramatic ‘Vertigo’ pendant by French designer Constance Guisset was seemingly made for this space, adding surprise and lightness as it gently moves and spins with the passing sea breeze.

The soft window treatments blend in beautifully and add a layer of privacy whilst still allowing natural light to effortlessly enter the space.

Fresh, neutral and soft tones create the perfect palette for the new serene bathrooms.

Winding up the new and improved staircase, we transformed two generous children's bedrooms into three! So now each child has their very own bedroom which we customised with unique, colourful details.

Our clients couldn't wait to utlise their new entertaining space and test-drive their new kitchen, so they hosted celebratory drinks and canapés with the interior and construction team to mark the completion of the project and the start of their new life in their modern family home by the sea.

Tick tock tick tock.

Demolition has begun and the countdown is on! We are on the clock to deliver a beautifully, redesigned family home all wrapped up in time for Christmas.

For our gorgeous family of five, their home near the beach was in the perfect location but in need of an update to improve functionality and flow.

Designed and built in an era where open plan living was not à la mode, we have completely redesigned the interiors to create lighter, brighter and wider open living spaces, maximising the views over the beautiful back garden and out to the ocean beyond.

The new layout offers a large, open kitchen with a butler’s pantry to die for, as well as a very stylish study nook.

The living spaces have been rearranged to include a generous and comfortable family room, a new music room and a guest bedroom.

There is nothing we love more than being on a construction site and seeing our carefully laid design plans coming to life before our eyes.

You may remember this 1970’s red brick façade that we shared last year . . . well, demo day is finally here and our clients (and I!) could not be more excited!

This vivacious family home is receiving a cosmetic upgrade throughout starting with the bathrooms, then the kitchen and living spaces and finally through to the exterior landscaping.

The existing bathrooms were in need of some love. We selected a minimalist monochromatic palette but focused on natural stones and varying textures to bring warmth to the spaces, although the addition of under floor heating will help with that too!

Decorative lighting in the form of smoked glass wall sconces will create a luxe boutique look in the powder room. A gorgeous sculptural freestanding bath in the main bathroom will provide the hotel vibe our clients were after.

A complete re-model of the kitchen is in order to increase functionality – walls will be removed and with the help of some steel beams an open plan kitchen with a large island bench will become the heart of the home. An enviable walk in butler’s pantry will be tucked to one side complete with wine fridge and a second dishwasher!

The original timber paneled ceiling in the kitchen space will soon be painted a fresh, crisp white.

The final piece of the puzzle is the exterior. For our Scottish-born client, expansive bi-fold doors will be added to each balcony to create the quintessential Australian indoor / outdoor living lifestyle. A fire pit, as well as a fully equipped outdoor kitchen and dining space will be added to ensure the garden is enjoyed all year round.
