EDGY TREATS FOR YOUR HOME THIS HALLOWEEN

With Halloween lurking upon us, we are thrilled to brew up a concoction of edgy yet sophisticated interior treats which will not only delight during this chilling and mysterious October event, but all year round! And there isn’t a pumpkin or witch’s hat in sight . . .

This sculptural piece of solid brass furniture has spooky written all over it!

The unusual three-legged chair brings the surreal to life, adopting and contorting the limbs of the human form to create a striking three-dimensional piece.

This piece is said to resemble a large nest that you’re able to crawl inside and wrap yourself within.

Yet when I look at the monstrous 100-metre velvet tubes weaved together all I can see is a giant brain! Eeeeek!

Either way, I would be thrilled to be curled up in this frameless sofa with a gripping murder mystery book in hand.

Every year, whether I choose to seize the Halloween spirit or not, ironically October seems to be the month I suffer from high candy cravings!

With a semitransparent design, those Halloween treats aren’t entirely out of sight out of mind in this cabinet . . . but at least they will be preserved in style . . . for a while!

I’ve never been the biggest fan of horror movies but throw in a good murder mystery book and I’m devouring it faster than my October candy fill!

It’s safe to say that I simply need these bold and dramatic marble book ends in my life to keep my my ever-expanding book collection under control. But I have no doubt they will also house a horror DVD collection just as enviably.

The Zuma Table Lamp by Kelly Wearstler is the ideal inclusion to create the right mood in any space

The Zuma Table Lamp by Kelly Wearstler is the ideal inclusion to create the right mood in any space

To ensure you have no unwanted guests lurking in the shadows, banish dark corners and spooky spaces in your home with this bold yet classic table lamp featuring juxtaposing hard and soft lines and shapes.

The mixed use of metals and the sneaky addition of Kelly’s signature kiss motif in the pull chain, creates an intriguing and alluring light option.

With so many luscious interior treats to choose from, I’m beginning to wish it was Halloween every month!

DESIGN ADVICE: BUILDING CHARACTER

Australian House & Garden Magazine was recently asked by one of their readers ' How do you breathe soul into a new build? We purchased a two-bedroom apartment off the plan and I'm not sure how to make it look less like a 'white box'. I was thinking of using storage units to break up the spaces. Is this the best approach? '

House & Garden consulted a panel of Interior Designer experts, including our very own Demi Barnes, for their help. Demi shares her advice:

New builds are typically finished with white and glossy surfaces to make them feel open, but they can feel uninviting until they're infused with the owner's personality. First, you need to layer tonal colour to create a warm atmosphere.

Gorgeous blue shades are layered in this London home

Then introduce accent colours that complement your existing pieces.

The burnt orange in the artwork is the perfect accent to the indigo walls of Donna Karan’s Manhattan apartment.

Coarsely woven area rugs are effective at softening sterile spaces. Or, try adding over-sized floor cushions and other textiles in bold patterns and colours.

Incorporating storage is a good way to break up an open-plan living space. Floating shelves or an arrangement of hooks allows you to create a gallery of sentimental items that is both practical and visually interesting.

You could use an open shelving unit as a room divider and add linen or wicker storage baskets.

Beaded moroccan baskets add a textural eclectic touch.

TOP SHELF WINTER READS

It's no secret at the AKD studio that I have an ever-growing wish list of inspiring design books I dream of adding to my bookshelf.

As winter sets in I'm especially looking forward to the darker, colder weekends and no longer needing an excuse to simply put my feet up! I can't wait to curl up under a soft blanket with a hot pot of honey tea beside me and dive head-first into the wonderful worlds created by Thomas Pheasant, David Collins, Jean-Louis Denoit and Nancy Braithwaite.

This is the epitome of classic American style. I imagine the home-owners in cashmere sweaters!

It has become therapeutic for me to hold a gorgeous design book in my hands; to turn their rich, glossy pages and breathe in the printed scent, instead of mindlessly scrolling for hours and hours through Pinterest and Instagram which I’m sure many of us are guilty of!

I dream of one day owning a home which houses a library filled to the brim with all of my dreamy interior design books. Artfully arranged by the colour of their spine, inter-dispersed with vignettes of tchotchkes, and standing perfectly proud between these gorgeous Moon Bookends by Studio Joa Herrenknecht.

Parisians have effortless style and sophistication, the perfect mix of classic and contemporary.

Parisians have effortless style and sophistication, the perfect mix of classic and contemporary.

Although each of these designers has an incredibly different aesthetic, I look to them for constant inspiration as they all create timeless stylish interiors. You know what they say, 'trends come and go but style is forever' . . .

Simplicity by Nancy Braithwaite

Simple interiors can be rich and inviting when there are layers of textures and tones. And lots and lots of books!
