UNDER CONSTRUCTION: ITALIAN INSPIRED VILLA VIBES

We have been working with our lovely clients to realise their dream family home, an Italian-inspired villa by the beach. The project is currently under construction, evolving organically and being carefully executed in stages to ensure the project remains on time and on budget! The focus of the first stage is to complete the main living level and the upper bedrooms, with the lower master suite level and the swimming pool to be completed in phase two.

There is of course a looming deadline, as there is with every project. However, the intrinsically relaxing energy surrounding this family home, the combination of natural light, ocean air and a leafy green outlook, create a sense of calm.

We could never tire of this view of the ocean from the comfort of the master suite!

The brief is to create a luxurious yet welcoming space for the whole family to enjoy. Our approach is to focus on materiality with a pared back sophisticated palette that features lime washed timber, powdery white walls, brushed limestone and tadelakt bathrooms. This tonal and textural ‘blank canvas’ allows us to add considered layers of colour and pattern.

Once the brief had been established with the client, we set about planning the spaces. Not only was the layout of the kitchen in question, the location was also to be determined! We played with a number of options; locating the kitchen at the front of the house closest to the sun-drenched courtyard, or to the rear mezzanine level with enviable views. Stay tuned for the big reveal to find out the final location of the kitchen!

The existing living area once featured structural columns that interrupted the flow of the expansive space. With some careful engineering, we were able to overcome this design challenge by relocating the columns, opening up the space to its full capacity. The client’s beloved three metre long Max Alto sofa now has a place to call home.

The new floor plan celebrated the sunlight, views and indoor-outdoor flow. The existing steel windows have been retained and re-used where possible, providing a layer of authenticity to the home. New high ribbon windows allow greenery into the home whilst still maintaining privacy. A new skylight that drenches the staircase in sunlight.

We are so excited to be a part of the evolution of this beachside family home. With the spatial planning and construction now well underway, we are enjoying the decorative phase of the project. Our clients are lovers of all things Italian (as are we!) so we can't wait to play with Italian fabrics, lighting and furnishings to ensure that every day feels like a holiday.

WELCOME HOME!

We are thrilled to welcome home our gorgeous clients and their young family, who recently moved back into their now-dream home on Sydney’s North Shore.

We first introduced you to this charming family six months ago, not long after their highly anticipated demolition day finally arrived.

While we can’t reveal the final results just yet, we are so excited to share some of the amazing progress that has taken place over the past few months.

The exterior of the home was significantly remodelled to allow for balconies off the living spaces. Now opening directly onto the courtyard and garden entertaining area, the new design achieves the perfect indoor-outdoor flow.

The traditional federation style of the home was retained to stay in keeping with the original architecture of the home and suburb aesthetic.

The old rumpus room has been transformed into a family friendly entertainment hub, complete with ample storage and all the comforts of a beautiful yet liveable family home.

One of the most dramatic spaces to transform was the kitchen and dining area, where walls were removed and reimagined to create a completely open floor plan.

The addition of new timber floors, marble bench tops, appliances and lighting strike the perfect balance for a functional yet timeless space appropriate for a growing young family, as well as entertaining for many years to come.

We look forward to sharing the final images once all the furniture and accessories have been installed.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH MEGAN MORTON AND SHARYN CAIRNS

As an interior designer I’m constantly asked what is the best part of my job.

Is it the thrill of a blank canvas and the world of possibility at the start of a new project? Is it scouring the globe for the perfect fabrics, furnishings, accessories and artwork? Is it the joy of meeting incredible clients and seeing the smiles on their faces as their dream home comes to life? Is it discovering emerging new designers and commissioning them to create one-off pieces? Or is it simply being immersed in beautiful things each and every day?

It is, of course, all of these things. But for me, the absolute best part of my job is at the end of a project when all of the months, or sometimes years, of hard work have paid off and the dream has become a reality. And nothing captures this special moment better than an all-star photoshoot!

We love collaborating with fellow creatives and we couldn’t think of a more talented duo to style and capture not one, but two of our most beloved projects that we recently completed after more than two years work, over a befitting two-day shoot.

As one of Australia’s most celebrated stylists, Megan Morton needs no introduction. We knew her signature style would perfectly match our design aesthetic – classic with a touch of clever and sometimes quirky detail. It was magic to see Megan’s passion for styling come to life right in front of our eyes. Her well thought-out selection of props, flowers and improvised arrangements led our clients to go on to purchase several of the pieces she had chosen for the photoshoot! Megan is renowned for her serious approach to dressing a bed and even though she patiently tried to teach me, it came as no surprise that I should definitely stick to my day job!

We have long pored over the beyond beautiful images of Sharyn Cairns in our beloved Vogue Living and Belle magazines each month and were ecstatic that she was willing and able to work with us for our two day shoot. What we love most about Sharyn’s photography is the way she perfectly captures mood, texture and space – all qualities that we place extreme importance on when we design our spaces. Her experience and eye for detail and is reflected in the final results and we can’t wait to share the two project albums with you soon so watch this space . . .

Sharyn Cairns and Alex on all fours checking the shot. It’s all in a day’s work!

We loved the opportunity of working with these two incredible women who share a love of interiors like we do and we look forward to working with them again in the future. Meanwhile we will be following (stalking!) them closely on social media and our favourite publications, and will continue to draw inspiration from their work.

It really was the best two days ever! I love my job!
