MILAN MUSINGS

In it's "55th year of wow in design" the annual Salone del Mobile in Milan is a pre-eminent design fair that showcases thousands of designs from around the world in one place, from furniture to lighting, bathrooms to wallpaper . . . the event is a champion of innovation and internationality.

Last year Jess recounted her ideal day at the fair with a "wish list" of what she would see and do if she were there. This year, once again, we have been poring over the design blogs and ogling the Instagram feeds of our industry colleagues who were pounding the pavement at Salone del Mobile.

We have put together some of our favourite trends emerging from the fair this year and we can't wait until they reach our shores so we can begin imagining them in Australian homes and spaces. Enjoy.

MILAN DREAMING

If I could be anywhere in the world right now, it would be at the Salone Internazionale Del Mobile, the world's most famous furniture fair, currently on in Milan from 14 - 19 April. As I see highlights popping up across social media and design blogs, my mind wanders to what it would be like to browse the international stands in person, to peruse Italy's finest showrooms, and touch and feel the latest design pieces from around the globe.

But alas! I can only but dream, so here are a few snippets from those daydreams . . . what I would do and see if I were at the Salone Internazionale right now . . .

I would start the day by visiting my favourite Italian suppliers Poliform, Minotti and Flexform. I know their new products are definitely a must-see, but also a must-try and must-feel!

Then, because I fall in love with each and every one of Tom Dixon’s new furniture and homewares collections, I would have to take a peek at his new exhibition entitled ‘Cinema’, which is taking place in an old picture house as part of the Designjunction showcase and featuring new and innovative accessories and lighting.

My curiosity would then lead me to the Kvadrat showcase, where I have been told that two famous brothers from my native country France  Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec – are launching a new ‘Ready Made Curtain’ for the Danish textile company Kvadrat.

The 'Ready Made Curtain' is available in three very French colour variations from warm whites, deep and pale blues and a flaming red.

Finally, I would make my way to the San Gregorio district of central Milan where London designer Lee Broom will be transforming a street of disused shops into what is certainly his most ambitious exhibition to date. Unveiling 20 new and very exciting products . . . a departure from his very singular, enigmatic and simple style.
