One of my greatest professional compliments occurred earlier this year when I was invited back to a past project and asked to look at it with fresh design eyes.
Twelve years had past since my dear long-standing clients originally briefed me to redesign their family home and now they were telling me to ’consider it a blank canvas’!
It was both rewarding and confronting to reconsider a design that I put my heart and soul into the first time. Would I be brave enough to say that some things had stood the test of time, whilst others could now benefit from more than a decade of my design experience?
The new design brief was centered around the conversion of some of the more dormant bedrooms into a new study/library, and an exciting customised ‘grandchildren’s wing’ including a series of playrooms complete with reading nooks, a theatrical stage and interactive art wall.
What was once a large family house is now a perfectly scaled two-bedroom home - at once reducing maintenance and administration, but more importantly affording our clients the luxury of really enjoying their new space and lifestyle with their expanding family at this later phase of their lives.
We are now halfway through construction and I cannot wait to walk my clients through the completed interiors and share it with their whole family, especially because the new design will be a surprise for the extended family including the grandchildren! Shhhhh . . .
