AN APPETITE FOR DESIGN

For those of us who have not been gallivanting around Europe enjoying a summer holiday on the Mediterranean Sea, we have been entertaining ourselves back home, enjoying the culinary delights and the design details of some of Sydney's finest bars and restaurants.

We have put together a few of our favourite dining details from venues around our studio in Potts Point and beyond, that we frequent for drinks after work with colleagues, meals with friends and catch ups with family. The list could go on . . . but here is just a taste!

We love the interior of Cho Cho San by George Livissianis with its back-lit ceiling that provides warm and ambient light for daytime and evening dining. The stretched Barrisol ceiling is a unique design feature that creates subtle lighting in what was a cavernous space with little access to natural light.

With French-colonial inspired interiors, The Butler on Victoria Street in Potts Point has seamlessly integrated the exterior green wall with the interior wall coverings, creating a lush, green restaurant and bar space that frames the panoramic view of Woolloomooloo and the CBD.

The Bridge Room in Sydney's CBD is a fine example of modern Australian cuisine. The sophisticated yet relaxed interior by Tobias Partners couples Japanese detail with Scandinavian style, housed in an historic 1930s Art Deco building. The tableware is a mix of Japanese ceramics and round felt placemats, coloured glass and simple cutlery, and acts as a neutral palette of textures and colours for which the food can be the hero.

We love the playful interiors at Merivale's Coogee Pavilion and its vast dining options including a wood-fire pizza oven, cocktail bar, coffee cart, oyster bar, flower stall and of course, the elaborate kids area with a life-size wall-mounted scrabble board. Even in winter, what better way to spend a weekend than with a family game of scrabble! The best thing about it? The kids can play for hours while the adults relax with a Beachside Fizz and a side of fries.

L.O.V.WE LOVE

With our studio located just a stone’s throw from the visually evocative Sydney florist Grandiflora, every day I’m lucky to pass their beautiful blooms as they make their way from the back of the white market van and into the enchanting studio where Saskia and her team work their magic. Needless to say, with only one sleep until Valentine’s Day, this morning the footpath outside Grandiflora was positively bursting with blooms destined to deliver smiles all over Sydney today and tomorrow.

AKD LOVES fresh flowers, but we wouldn’t complain if Cupid treated us to any of the following tomorrow.

Start the day with a cup of tea in bed . . .

'My perfect Valentine's Day starts with tea in bed. I love the ceremony and ritual of tea. This tea tin is sexy and beautiful – the perfect combination of contemporary and traditional style and purpose. Every day would be Valentine's Day with this morning cup of tea!' Alex

‘The trays are called Karui, which in Japanese means soft, in relation to the leather part, but also light – the trays have a light aesthetic’.

But wait, don’t get up just yet. Stay right
where you are and enjoy breakfast while
you’re
there . . .

‘I’m dreaming up big things this Valentine's Day. It all starts with breakfast in bed served on this beautiful GamFratesi tray that I’ve been crushing on ever since I saw it at Maison&Objet 2015. I love the combination of the leather with the brass trim . . . it would look so luxe on my Frette bedspread. A girl can dream can't she?' Amandine

Only when you’re well rested, satiated and ready to start your day, do you find a little love note from you-know-who . . .

‘Handwritten cards and letters are one of my favourite treasures, often valued more than the gift they come with, or enjoyed as a gift on their own. These beautiful white Frank Lloyd Wright embossed notecards provide the perfect blank canvas to tell our loved ones just how much they really mean to us.’ Julia

Quartz is the ultimate home healer with incredible  mineral properties . . . Perfect for the one you love on Valentine’s Day or indeed any day.

mineral properties . . . Perfect for the one you love on Valentine’s Day or indeed any day.

But we know there never really needs to be a reason . . .

‘I like the idea that a Valentine’s Day gift can be ‘just because’ . . . sure it’s an occasion to mark and some people believe it to be more special than others, but the idea of a gift ‘just because’ you were thinking of someone at the time you saw it, or ‘just because’ you want to remind someone you love them is my perfect kind of gift. And I love these beautiful ‘Mineral Blossom’ quartz pieces by Phillipa Carnemolla ‘just because’.’ Finola

As the sun sets on another Valentine’s Day, it is a nice excuse to enjoy a romantic dinner for two . . .

'I love food! Food is for me one of the most exciting areas of design exploration – it's an experience for all your senses – and Valentine’s Day has always been the perfect excuse to try a new exquisite restaurant! Two restaurants remain on my Sydney 'must do' list – The Bridge Room in the CBD and Sepia Restaurant in the prestigious Darling Park precinct. Both restaurants propose a Modern cuisine with an Asian twist served in an elegant décor . . . Bon Appetit!' Jessica

What a perfect day! But don’t forget to keep spreading the love all year round . . .

'Chocolates and flowers won't last but these amazing foil prints from the blacklist store will. There is still so much to love about metallics. Whether silver, gold or copper, metallics are a trend here to stay, and the best part is they perfectly compliment any colour scheme 365 days a year.' Demi
